Jose Mourinho dismisses reports linking Real Madrid with a swoop for Chelsea No1 Thibaut Courtois.
Jose Mourinho has laughed off reports linking Real Madrid with Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois.
The Champions League holders suffered a humiliating 4-0 La Liga defeat by the goalkeeper’s former club Atletico Madrid in Saturday’s derby.
Madrid captain Iker Casillas had a particularly forgettable game, fuelling speculation that los Blancos would look to replace the Spain international at the end of the season.
Carlo Ancelotti has regularly been linked with a move for Manchester United number one David De Gea over the past couple of months, but reports in the media suggest Madrid are eyeing up Courtois.
Mourinho isn’t worried, though, reassuring the journalists assembled at Tuesday’s pre-match media conference at Cobham that he knows how the Spanish media works after his three-year stint at the Bernabeu.
Mourinho said: “[There are reports] because they lost, next week they win, they don’t speak. I know Madrid a lot better than you. They lost so a lot of news: some true, some not true. Next week, they win and no news.”
Courtois has impressed in his first Premier League season after usurping long-term Chelsea No1 Petr Cech following his return from a three-year loan stay at Atletico in the summer.
Asked about Eden Hazard’s new contract, Mourinho introduced some humour to an otherwise succinct media conference, joking that he needed to buy a new pen before the deal could be inked.
“I am buying a nice pen,” he smiled. “I need a bit of time to go to Sloane street to get a proper pen. So I just need time to buy the pen and after that, I think not a long time to go.”
